Our Review:
DARF Light is a little different from many “light” foods. Rather than simply reducing meat and replacing it with large quantities of carbohydrate, DARF still uses 60% animal ingredients, including chicken neck, beef, lamb, goat, chicken meat, beef heart, lung, tripe and liver.
The recipe then contains 10% raw dried carrot, 9% raw dried apple and 5% millet, together with 2% krill, 1% coconut oil and 1% nettle. DARF states that the food is gluten free.
What really differentiates it within our range, however, is its nutritional profile. At 20% protein and only 7% fat, providing approximately 292 kcal per 100g, it is considerably leaner than many of the other premium foods we stock.
That doesn't automatically make it a “weight-loss food” for every dog — portion control and overall calorie intake remain critical — but it does give us a genuinely useful lower-fat, lower-energy option.

A lot of premium foods are deliberately high in protein, fat and calories, which can be excellent for active dogs but isn't necessarily what every dog needs.
We specifically chose DARF Light because its 7% fat and lower 292 kcal/100g energy density gives us a more appropriate option to consider for older dogs, less active dogs and dogs whose weight needs careful management, while still retaining DARF's 60% animal ingredient content and cold-pressed approach.
It also gives us an alternative for owners whose vet has advised them to look for a lower-fat diet. In those circumstances, however, we would always recommend confirming the dog's individual dietary requirements with their vet rather than treating a retail “light” food as a veterinary diet.
